Chikhaldara's history dates back to ancient times, with references to the region found in the epic Mahabharata. According to legend, the Pandava prince Bhima created the Bhimkund reservoir by striking the ground with his mace during their exile. This reservoir is believed to be located in Chikhaldara, adding to the region's mythological significance.

Melghat Tiger Reserve, located in Central India on a southern extension of the Satpura Hill Range known as the Gavilgarh Hills, is a vital habitat for tigers. The Reserve's southern boundary is marked by a steep east-west ridge, with its highest point at Vairat (1178 m above sea level). Drained by five significant rivers—Khandu, Khapra, Sipna, Gadga, and Dolar, all tributaries of the Tapti—the River Tapti defines the Reserve's northern and eastern boundaries. Melghat stands as Maharashtra's premier biodiversity reserve. Its rugged terrain is interspersed with extensive plateaus, including Makhala, Chikhaldara, Chiladari, Patulda, and Gugamal. The Critical Tiger Habitat covers 1500.49 square kilometers and comprises five protected areas: Gugamal National Park, Melghat Sanctuary, Narnala, Ambabarwa, and Wan Sanctuaries. According to Champion and Seth (1968), the Reserve's forests are classified as Southern Tropical Dry Deciduous Forests.

Resting tall and strong on an unaccompanied hill of the Satpura mountain range, the Narnala Fort stands as a testimony to the Mughals' rich history and their remarkable architecture.
